Driver Sought After Deadly Wrong Way Crash

At last word, police were still trying to find the driver responsible for a head on crash that left three people dead early Sunday morning on State Road 44 in Volusia County. The Florida Highway Patrol says the driver who caused the crash was traveling the wrong way on the highway at the time, and they fled the scene of the crash, which shut down State Road 44 in both directions yesterday just before 2:30am. Troopers said a Toyota Tacoma was driving westbound in the eastbound inside lane when it crashed into another vehicle driven by a 22-year-old New Smyrna Beach man. Another vehicle driven by a 30-year-old Edgewater man, then crashed into the Tacoma. A fourth vehicle was driven by a 60-year-old New Smyrna Beach woman who saw the whole thing happen, and was able to avoid both vehicles as she traveled through the debris. Three passengers in the in the car that was hit head on were killed in the crash. The suspected driver of the Tacoma left the scene on foot. The whole thing remains under investigation.
