Shots Fired From Sebastian Boat

A man was arrested after he fired shots at police and at boats in the Indian River near Sebastian. 53-year-old Derrick Johnston is behind bars on a $100,000 bond following the incident that happened last Friday night around 8:30, when witnesses on the docks at Captian Hirams Resort and Squid Lips Overwater Grill say Johnston was firing his gun from his vessel. They say Johnston yelled at another boater who had lights on with a running generator, and when that person yelled back at him, Johnston fired three shots. Another boater said they were moving at idle speed near Johnston’s anchored sailboat, when Johnston began yelling at them, and then they heard gunshots and bullets striking the water near their vessel. As officers approached Johnston’s sailboat, they too were shot at. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office called in their helicopter, and Johnston then fired at the aircraft, which then had to turn off its lights in order to keep from being hit. Eventually, Johnston was taken into custody… telling officers he lived on the sailboat, did nothing wrong, and didn’t know why deputies were on his boat. He smelled of alcohol and his speach was slurred. He no longer lives on the boat. His new home is the Indian River County Jail, where he remains on a $100,000 bond.
