One man is dead and now nine Brevard County deputies are on paid administrative leave… as is normal procedure in instances such as this… after the man pulled a gun on the deputies and fired at them. It all began around 10 Wednesday night with a call about a suspicious person trying to break into cars at Sunset Bay apartments on Merritt Island. Deputies say Richard Ruiz was in violation of an injunction for protection due to an earlier domestic violence incident involving a person who lives at the complex. When Ruiz saw the deputies, he took off on State Road 520. The officers took off after him, and the chase led to Interstate 95 where Ruiz even drove in the wrong direction for a bit on the interstate before turning off onto State Road 528 where the deputies were finally able to stop him. As they approached the vehicle, Ruiz opened fire on them, so the deputies returned fire… killing Ruiz. The investigation is ongoing.
