Local Airport Serves As Staging Area

While Hurricane Idalia for the most part, skipped by the Space Coast, a coordinated response to the storm included Brevard County. The National Guard positioned 10 rescue helicopters and nearly 50 crew members at Melbourne Orlando International Airport, in order to be ready to go as quickly as possible after the hurricane passed through Florida. Brevard County emergency management officials… as did others in many of the unaffected areas across Florida… also mobilized resources to assist the state in recovery efforts. The more than 2,400 acre airport in Melbourne was put to use as one of several staging points for rapid response. Idalia brought heavy flooding and 125 mph winds when it slammed ashore Wednesday morning as a Category 3 storm near Perry, in Florida’s Big Bend.
