New Law Toughens Rail Safety Measures

Florida’s railroad industry, including Brightline, supports a new provision signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis. HB 1301 increases penalties for drivers and pedestrians who fail to yield at active railroad tracks. First-time offenders can face fines up to $500, 25 hours of community service, and six points on their driver’s license. The goal, according to the Florida Rail Alliance, is to promote safety and discourage risky behavior around railroad crossings. Recent incidents, including fatalities near Brightline tracks, are seen as being behind the new law.
