Activists, Sheriff Agree New Brevard Animal Shelter Needed

Animal advocates and Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey are on the same page about the county’s public animal shelter: it needs to be replaced. An online petition blasting the shelter for hot and overcrowded conditions has picked up more than 1,400 signatures. Ivey says a new climate-controlled shelter is already in the works, with plans to break ground within the next two years at the current Eau Gallie Boulevard site. The existing facility, inherited by the sheriff’s office in 2014, is described as outdated and in critical need of replacement. In the meantime, a temporary housing structure is being planned for the animals.
