Melbourne Beach is introducing a beach ambassador program, tapping civilian volunteers for beach safety. The trained ambassadors will educate beachgoers on hazards, including rip currents, first aid, and wildlife protection. While not replacing first responders, they’ll provide initial assistance. The goal? Reduce the need for additional lifeguards. The town’s proposal aims to enhance safety without straining resources. Those interested in volunteering should email firetraining@melbournebeachfl.org. The plan would go into effect in the budget year that starts Oct. 1.
