The city of Melbourne will hold the dedication of the Tim Wakefield Sports Complex during Little League Opening Day this Saturday morning at 9. The legendary knuckleballer was inducted into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Last November, the Melbourne City Council approved a resolution to change the name of Crane Field Park to Tim Wakefield Sports Complex to honor Wakefield, who passed away last year at the age of 57 following a battle with brain cancer. The designation of the sports complex to honor him was done to provide a long-lasting and permanent testament to Wakefield’s commitment to the City of Melbourne, where he was born back in 1966. Wakefield attended Eau Gallie High School and then went on to Florida Institute of Technology, then was drafted by Major League Baseball. His wife, 53 year old Stacy Wakefield, passed away on Wednesday after battling pancreatic cancer, less than five months after her husband’s death.
