Wild Chameleons Abound!

Invasive chameleon populations are exploding along the Space Coast, and that explosive growth is being attributed in large part by people who release their exotic pets into the wild. The influx has led to increased sightings and also to new concerns from local animal rescues, such as Wild Florida Rescue. The chameleons, which have recently been seen in growing numbers in Brevard County, pose a threat to local ecosystems by disrupting native species. The Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission says that while chameleons are less concerning than other invasive species, their presence could affect native wildlife. Residents are being asked now to report sightings and everyone is urged to avoid releasing pets into the wild.
