Homeless Man Arrested After Deadly Melbourne Fight

A homeless man has been arrested in Melbourne after a fight that police say involved drugs turned deadly late over the weekend. Police say 44-year-old John Collins had confronted 31-year-old Joshua Smith and accused Smith of stealing drugs from him. That sparked a fight between the two, in which Collins’ knife fell out of his pocket. Smith armed himself with the knife and then stabbed Collins. It happened on the 200 block of East Eau Gallie Boulevard at a BP station. Police say once he realized how badly injured Collins was, he tried to provide first aid, and then called for help. Collins was rushed to the hospital, but he later died. Smith was initially arrested for aggravated battery and taken to the Brevard County Jail. His charges were upgraded from aggravated battery to 2nd degree murder after Collins’ death. This case is still under investigation.
