A Southern white rhinoceros who lived at Brevard Zoo for over a decade, has passed away at the Phoenix Zoo. The zoo announced that Howard was euthanized after treatment for a progressive neurological condition became ineffective. Howard, affectionately known as “Howie,” was born at the White Oak Conservation Center in 2007 and was transferred to the Phoenix Zoo in 2020 to be with a female rhino. His keepers described him as an easy-going rhino who enjoyed interacting with visitors and staff. The loss of Howard is deeply felt by the Hoofstock team at the zoo.
