Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, the tropics remain active as the National Hurricane Center is now monitoring two named storms and a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Kirk has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm, boasting maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. While Kirk is not expected to make landfall, it will produce dangerous surf and rip currents for the East Coast over the weekend. Tropical Storm Leslie, located 580 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane with winds of 50 mph. Though it is moving westward, Leslie is also not projected to affect land. And finally, the National Hurricane Center is also tracking a disturbance in the Caribbean, which may bring significant rainfall to Florida in the coming days, despite diminishing chances of development.
