The SPCA of Brevard has announced layoffs for 15% of its animal care team and a cutback on animal intakes as it tries to manage a financial crisis. It comes after the organization’s funding struggles required what they referred to as “heart-wrenching” decisions, including reducing shelter capacity by half. The nonprofit, which relies entirely on donations, asked for community support through monthly giving or shopping at its thrift stores. Rising care costs, combined with the sale of a clinic that served as a revenue source, have intensified the financial challenges for the shelter.
