Move Afoot To Make The Flamingo The Florida State Bird

Florida lawmakers are once again pushing to change the state bird. A proposal has been made to make the American flamingo the official state bird, replacing the mockingbird, which has held the title since 1927. The bill also designates the Florida scrub-jay as the state songbird. American flamingos, often seen in the Everglades and Keys, had a noticeable uptick in sightings statewide in 2023, possibly due to Hurricane Idalia. The legislative session begins March 4th, and the change is among many proposals set to be discussed.
