2 Wildfires Scorch Hundreds Of Acres In Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Two wildfires near Kennedy Space Center scorched nearly 700 acres in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The fires, sparked by lightning over the weekend, were said to be just 50% contained as of Tuesday afternoon. The larger “Patrick” fire has burned around 450 acres, while the “Savannahs” fire covers 140 acres. Officials say NASA facilities are not at risk, and no injuries have been reported. Fire crews meanwhile, are hard at work trying to contain the blazes amid high winds and dry conditions.
