Arbitrator Upholds Non Renewal Of Brevard Teacher In Name Dispute

An arbitrator has ruled Brevard Public Schools does not have to rehire 12 year veteran teacher Melissa Calhoun following a dispute over Florida’s student name law. Calhoun was terminated after using a student’s preferred name without written parental consent. While the arbitrator ordered a formal reprimand rescinded over procedural issues, he upheld the superintendent’s authority to deny renewing her annual contract. Calhoun remains licensed but is not returning to the district.
