Beaches Could Be Hit with Record Seaweed Coverage

A record-breaking amount of sargassum seaweed is headed toward Florida’s beaches, with levels in the Caribbean and West Atlantic reaching 200% higher than average. The University of South Florida reports the massive seaweed blob could bring unpleasant conditions to the state’s coastline, particularly with the strong odor it produces when it washes ashore. While sargassum plays an important ecological role, experts warn it could pose health risks for those with respiratory issues.
