Former Apollo & Shuttle Astronaut Thomas Mattingly Dies At 87

Another legendary astronaut has passed away. NASA is reporting that Thomas Mattingly, a rear admiral who flew on Apollo 16 and two space shuttle missions, died Tuesday. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said Mattingly was key to the success of the Apollo Program. Mattingly may be best known for the mission he didn’t fly on. Mattingly was scrubbed from the Apollo 13 mission just days before it launched because of exposure to German Measles. He was replaced by Jack Swigert. Mattingly was played by Gary Sinise in the 1995 movie about the Apollo 13 mission, when because of his training for it, he became heavily involved in the efforts to get the crew home after the spacecraft was damaged. Tom Mattingly was 87 years old.
