Tests Using Soundwaves to Combat Algae Underway in Brevard County

Brevard County is testing soundwaves to stop toxic algae blooms in the Indian River Lagoon. Researchers are using ultrasonic transducers to disrupt algae cells before they grow and choke off the ecosystem. If it works, the county could deploy the devices fast—hanging them from docks as blooms start. The year-long pilot is backed by a $200,000 state grant. Some however, have raised concerns about how animals… such as dolphins and manatees… might be affected by the devices.
