Police Now Targeting Speeders

Operation Southern Slow Down is underway, with Florida joining seven other southern states in a crackdown on speeding. It launched on Monday, and it runs through this Saturday, with the aim of reducing traffic fatalities. At yesterday’s kickoff event at Daytona International Speedway, Highway Patrol officers and other state officials highlighted the difference between controlled racing environments and public roads. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood was among them, and they all emphasized the goal: “Arrive alive.” The campaign means increased law enforcement efforts, focusing on young drivers, who are disproportionately involved in speeding-related crashes.
