Child Drowns In Retention Canal In Volusia County

A 2-year-old boy died Saturday evening in an accidental drowning at his family’s property in Volusia County. The boy’s mother discovered him in a nearby retention canal in Osteen after noticing one of the family dogs was wet and the other was barking at the canal’s edge. Deputies performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived and rushed the child to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 7PM. Investigators say the child wandered from the fenced backyard, opened a gate and walked about 300 feet to the canal. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
