Lagoon Tax Stalled

The Brevard County Commission has voted against allowing voters to decide on a 10-year extension of the half-cent sales tax for the Indian River Lagoon. Despite public support for the extension, which was seen as crucial for the lagoon’s restoration, commissioners felt the decision should be postponed. Commissioner Rob Feltner suggested placing it on the 2026 ballot to align with a future board’s perspectives, while Commissioner John Tobia emphasized the need to evaluate the current tax’s impact before requesting additional funding. Restoration efforts meanwhile are not stopping. They will continue under the existing “Save Our Lagoon Project Plan.”
