Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey has been vindicated after a judge in Okeechobee County dismissed a defamation lawsuit against him over his “Wheel of Fugitive” social media program. The lawsuit, filed by David Gay, alleged that Ivey falsely labeled him a fugitive, causing job loss and mental distress. However, Judge Laurie Buchanan ruled that public officials have “absolute immunity” for statements made during their official duties. The case was moved to Okeechobee County after several Brevard County judges recused themselves.
