Boat Strikes, Young Deaths Drive Florida Manatee Losses

Florida wildlife officials say 76 manatees have died from boat strikes this year, the highest number in five years. But alves dying within a year of birth — remain the leading cause, with 107 recorded so far. Overall, 509 manatees have died in 2025, fewer than the five-year average, but more than last year. Biologists say the spike in young deaths may signal lingering malnutrition or possibly a rebound in manatee reproduction.
